Under the Surface

What really goes on under the asphalt of the Circus? The Museum of London’s Archaeology Department is about to do a focused excavation, taking around a week from June 24th. The aim is to find out what the mound is made of, and what the original surface was like, and to give an opportunity to local people to come and look and ask questions. They say:

The evaluation of the mound will be carried out by digging a trench up to 1.2m depth and sinking one or two window samples through the base of the trench to the bottom of the mound. We could involve local children in this process but only once the trench has been opened and secured

More details when we know them.
