Fresh Eyes, New Views

March 12, 2011

If you hurry, you’ll just be able to catch a delightful show a stone’s throw from Arnold Circus. It is in a gallery at 54 Rivington Street –  space fiftyfour – and is called ‘Our Life’.

It is the fruit of two years’ work by children from Old Ford Primary School, inspired by having an artist, Bethany Murray, working alongside them in a portakabin that slowly got more and more decorated and colourful – inside and out.

The idea comes under an umbrella initiative called Room 13. Spread around the world, there are 60 ‘Room 13’s – schools that have an artist in residence,  not just coming in for a one-off project. The exhibition, ‘Our Life’, shows just a few of the paintings and photographs that have resulted from the one in Bethnal Green. They are joyful, observant and impressive. And their young makers who confidently took visitors round their show at the Private View were just as impressive too.

'City' -- Nadiyah Shah, aged 11

‘Our Life’ is on only till Monday. But if you can get there, look out for a painting by 8 year-old Imane Alliah of Arnold Circus. And if you just can’t get there, then have a look at the website that’ll tell you and show you more about this lovely project.
