The Summer starts here –

April 11, 2011

Get your diaries out

Last year was a bumper year, and we managed to raise enough money to put on a great show to celebrate the 100th birthday of the bandstand and the total renovation of the Circus.

But since then Austerity has crept in, for us and for much of the world….

So this summer is going to be home-grown and local.  Come and support us and join in and show that money might be low, but spirits can be high.

Events are – as usual – free.

Sunday May 29th

Arnold Day

Arthur Arnold was born in May in 1833 and died in May 1902. Come and sit in deckchairs, sip cups of tea and listen to the cheerful rousing music of the marvellous Pavilion Brass Band – long-time favourites on the Circus. Come and find out who Arthur was, and keep an eye on this blogsite beforehand for the recipe for Arnold Biscuits and a chance to bake.

Tea 2.30 on. Music 3 – 5pm.

Sunday June 19th

Carrom Marathon Day

This enthralling Asian board game needs a steady eye and it’s great to watch the moves of the experts. All levels – beginners to addicts – are welcome to join in: compete or just try your hand, and be given tips or training by older hands at the game. But also…..

This year is Carrom with a difference.

Can you help this man raise £1,000 for sick children?

This is Carrom Marathon Man – Aka Raj of the Carrom Cafe – and an amazing carrom player. Can you match him? Come and help him play.

He will be taking on all comers in a four-hour marathon on Sunday June 19th, and raising money – with the Friends of Arnold Circus – for charity.

Carrom Marathon Day is in association with the Carrom Cafe who will be bringing their chai and lassis.

Come and watch the fun, see if Raj can survive for FOUR HOURS unbeaten on a carrom board.

And win a prize if you can help Raj clear the board in the quickest time!

1  – 5pm

Monday June 20th

Annual General Meeting – on Arnold Circus at 7pm (and if it rains, in St Hilda’s).

This is the time to find out how we’ve done in the past year, what plans are for the future, and how to get involved. If you are thinking about being a board member, contact Farid (usma9@yahoo.com ): you could come to one of our monthly meetings first to see what it is all about. With refreshments.

Sunday July 17th

The Arnold Circus Sharing Picnic – you are invited!

We invite you to come and bring your own picnic and one dish to share with others, for the sharing table. We offer music, activities for children, a traffic-free closed-off road, friendliness, surprises and the final great bike ride.

NB  Hackney Wheelers offer free bike surgery the day before the Picnic, to make sure that all bikes planning to take up the challenge of                             cycling 100 times round the bandstand at the picnic are in good shape.   3  –  5 pm.

We’d welcome volunteers for the Picnic and all events. If you’d like to be part of the team, contact Marine – marine.bisharoshah@gmail.com

Spitalfields Music down on the farm

Their special family event this year is at Spitalfields City Farm on June 18th, from midday till 5pm.  For full info on the Spitalfields Music Summer Festival (10-25 June) as a whole – 020 7377 1362 or www.spitalfields.music.org.uk

Why not make a weekend of it, and come on to Arnold Circus for the carrom the next day?

and lastly…..OpenOpen

We have a new on-line calendar where you can enter anything you plan to do on the Circus: from putting on an event to inviting people to come and play chess with you – or anything you notice – from new plants to chance encounters. It’s where you can find out the nuts and bolts of putting on an event and what is going on there too.
